Start page design study updated

2005-07-29 23:46:44 | johann | #

With your invaluable feedback, I have created an improved version of the live design study for the new start page. What do you think?

  • Smaller logo but with text.
  • New colors for links.
  • Better button captions.
  • One line of "what is this".
  • Lighter language selector.
  • Replaced tab bar with some links above the URL input field.

http prefill

The design is nice, but there probably should be a way to select browsers/OSs already. Most of us have a bunch of test browsers already, and only need to validate a few of the available ones. If by default you always create screenshots for *every* configuration that might put more strain on the system than necessary. Also, I don't think the http:// prefill is that useful. Most of the time the url will be copied from the browser anyway, and in that case the existing http is only in the way.

much better, more whitespace, i like that. i agree with the previous poster that having the ability to select the browsers would make it more usable. i think the http prefix is helpful. thanks for this!

Selecting browsers

Selecting browsers definitly makes sense. I always just take the Browsers running on a different OS than Windoze..

Hi, actually browser choice is available in the "advanced" tab. Johann, I would recommend to change the text of "advanced" to "options". This design is great by the way.

Thanks for your feedback everybody. I have removed some redundant browsers from the default selection: Mozilla, Galeon, Epiphany all use the same rendering engine as Firefox. You can change the defaults by clicking the "Options" link (formerly known as "Advanced").

The design is nice, but make the text - browsershots.org - smaller. Make a new favicon with less details.

Default Selection Change

"... Mozilla, Galeon, Epiphany all use the same rendering engine as Firefox ..." This isn't entirely true, in using browsershots, we've determined that rendering by Galeon and Epiphany shows significantly different results than Firefox. If you would like to see a specific example, please email me. With reference to your new design. Outstanding work, simple and effective. I still think that users should see options for selecting the browsers before submitting though. If nothing else, it would help to reduce the workload by reducing the number of screenshots where users do not always want to see shots for browsers on the default list. All in all, this site is an absolutely outstanding resource for webmasters. Keep up the excellent work. Mat.

I have been using iCapture a long time, never knew about this until now. Great work!
